DSpace ORCID Capabilities: Further information
The examples on this page have been grouped using the ORCID ‘Collect and Connect’ terminology of:
- Collect ORCID IDs
- Display ORCID IDs on your website
- Connect ORCID records with affiliation information
- Synchronise ORCID record data with your systems
More details on the Collect and Connect actions for Research Institutions are given on the ORCID website.

Connect
Open Repository (BIOMEDCENTRAL/ATMIRE)
The Open Repository platform (a hosted repository solution acquired by Atmire in July 2016) supports a number of interactions with ORCID via the ORCID API including:
- Adding an existing ORCID
- Registering for a new ORCID from within the repository
- Viewing other research and explore relationships associated with an ORCID
- Maintaining persistence of ORCID information in the repository
While this does not appear to be part of the standard DSpace ORCID integration, perhaps there is the opportunity to engage with Atmire to contribute it back to the community.
This functionality is used by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), as described in the 2015 presentation “ORCID Integration: Services to Create and Use ORCID IDs at KAUST”
DSpace-CRIS
DSpace-CRIS is an open source extension of DSpace that includes functionality useful to users of CRIS systems. The DSpace-CRIS Product RoadMap documents features related to ORCID integration that have been included in various releases since 2015.
Since version 5.2.1 (released July 2015), DSpace-CRIS has supported:
- Authentication with ORCID
- ORCID lookup
- Import publications from an ORCID profile
- Ability to push biographic data, publications and projects to an ORCID profile
Additionally:
- In version 5.5 (released March 2016) the DSpace-CRIS extension introduced the ability to provide direct access to the researcher profile using external identifiers to make it easy to link external systems to the researcher profile. The following example (dummy) URL shows how it is possible to link to a researcher profile page using an ORCID: http://demo-dspace-cris.cineca.it/cris/rp/details.htm?lt=orcid&lv=0000-0002-9421-192X
- Since version 5.2 DSpace-CRIS has supported the ability to authenticate to DSpace via ORCID
Synchronise
Currently no examples of the ‘Synchronise’ action within DSpace have been documented for inclusion here. If you have an example please let us know at help@jisc.ac.uk.
Other integrations
DSpace Native Integration
DSpace is well tooled for integrating ORCID’s into repository metadata. It enables direct lookup via the ORCID API of author names and ORCIDs, and additionally adds more information regarding the author to the repository record.
The following documentation page sections describe 3 aspects of integration:
- Adding ORCIDs on submission
- Adding ORCIDs via the administrative interface
- Adding ORCIDs via batch CSV editing
While this approach allows the recording of ORCID iDs, it isn’t compliant with the ORCID “Collect” action as the ORCIDs are not collected through a user authenticating with the ORCID service.
Dryad
The Dryad data repository allows users to add ORCIDs to items when they submit items into the repository. This functionality is described on the Dryad wiki. It is noted that this is the same as the use case implemented for the DSpace Native Integration.
Based on the information on the Dryad wiki, it seems that the integration is not currently compliant with the ORCID “Collect” action as the ORCIDs are not collected through a user authenticating with the ORCID service.
Additionally Dryad supports the ability for DSpace users to authenticate to DSpace using ORCID.
