Eprints ORCID Capabilities: Further information

Introduction

This page describes the currently available integrations between ORCID and EPrints, and how the various different aspects of ORCID’s Collect and Connect principles are facilitated by these integrations. The Collect and Connect terminology is (in brief) described as follows:

  • Collect: collect ORCID IDs using authentication
  • Display: display ORCID IDs on your website
  • Connect: connect ORCID records with affiliation information
  • Synchronise: synchronise ORCID record data with your systems

For more details head to the ORCID website.

Further Information

ORCID Support Plugin

The ORCID Support plugin provides a new ORCID field for both creator and editor details. Using this field, records can now include ORCID IDs as part of affiliation data. These fields are properly validated, and presented with the official ORCID logo and are linked to the ORCID website page associated with the ORCID ID presented.

  • Documentation

The ORCID Support Plugin together with the Generic Reporting Framework plugin provides support for reporting ORCID usage.

ORCID Support Advance Plugin

The ORCID Support Advance plugin, allows a user who is signed into EPrints to associate their EPrints account with an ORCID account. Subsequently, the respective ORCID id will be stored into EPrints.

The ORCID Support Advance plugin allows a user to both push and pull data between ORCID and EPrints after providing suitable authentication. The user or admin must actively choose to push/pull record data, this is not a service which is performed automatically.  However, affiliation information can be set up to automatically be asserted to a user’s ORCID record after authentication is provided.

  • Requires ORCID member API credentials

To use the ORCID Support Advance plugin you must have ORCID membership and also have the ORCID Support plugin installed.

The ORCID Support Advance Plugin together with the Generic Reporting Framework plugin provides even more support for reporting ORCID usage.

ORCID Tier 2 API Framework

Digital Repository Services Ltd have developed a plugin which offers the option for users to authorise and collect ORCID IDs, and subsequently import data into EPrints from ORCID using the Tier 2 API.

  • Github code link
  • Implementing the plugin requires some technical expertise.
  • Requires ORCID member API credentials

EThOS ORCID profile updater

EThOS ORCID profile updater is a standalone app which allows a user to pull data from EPrints and submit this metadata to an ORCID account. This requires authentication by the ORCID record holder.

  • Github code link

Making this app compatible with your EPrints will require some technical expertise.

Reporting

Generic Reporting Framework Plugin

When used in conjunction with the ORCID Support and ORCID Support Advance plugins, the Generic Reporting Framework plugin can provide reports regarding your users and their ORCID usage. In conjunction with the ORCID Support plugin, you can produce reports which detail how many users have associated items which include a listed ORCID in them. With the ORCID Support Advance plugin, you can request reports on the number of users who have authenticated their EPrints account with their respective ORCID.

Other Integrations

University of Pittsburgh

The University of Pittsburg has implemented the ability to record ORCID IDs without direct integration with the ORCID API. The approach taken by University of Pittsburg is described at https://wiki.eprints.org/w/ORCID#Notes_from_Pittsburgh, including code used to validate ORCIDs.
