May 25th workshop – functional and technical synthesis

Since the ORCID UK Members workshop on 25 May in Birmingham, involving over 70 people, the Jisc team has been working to extract and synthesise the functional and technical issues, challenges and opportunities, current and emerging, identified across all the workshop sessions. This includes Use Cases, including the near and wider ecosystem and Technical Requirements, generic and system specific.

The result is in the ORCID-Technical-Themes document – 52 statements extracted verbatim from extensive session notes, listed by workshop session. A high level theme has been allocated to each statement – and a Thematic Index is provided to facilitate navigation and review, divided in to three groups: Development Related (22 items), Dialogue Related (16 items) and Use Case Definition (14 items).

It should be noted that there were no system specific discussions for Converis (the event coincided with the Converis User Group), or for Fedora and Worktribe (where users joined other sessions).

We hope you’ll find the list useful in pinpointing issues for your own university. However, it is also crucial for the consortium that we identify cases for collective action, for example through system user groups, or where the Jisc team can take a lead. The next step for the Jisc team is therefore to seek quick wins where they exist and also to consult with members, with system groups and vendors, and with ORCID to prioritise other actions.
