Preparing for ORCID Self Service – actions and webinar

Posted: October 24, 2018   Updated: January 10, 2022Categories Community, Events, Presentations, TechnicalTags ORCID, self-service, webinar

How ORCID UK Consortium members manage the information about their ORCID contacts within their institution is changing. ORCID have mandated that all Consortium Consortia must start using their Self Service contacts management system by the end of this calendar year. The Jisc UK consortium is in the process of making this switch. After the switch, you will be responsible for directly updating information about your institutional contacts and information using ORCID Self Service.

What will we need to do?

In order to ensure you can access the new system, members involved in ORCID administration should ensure that they have an ORCID account AND THAT IT IS ASSOCIATED WITH AN INSTITUTIONAL EMAIL ADDRESS. Therefore all you need to do before switchover, is to log into your ORCID account, or create an ORCID iD if you do not already have one, check your email address associated with the account, and update it where needed. The switchover itself will happen without members actually needing to do anything.

How can we find out more?

Jisc and ORCID are jointly holding a webinar on ORCID Self Service – 11:00 on Wednesday 7 November. You can find out about it here:
https://www.jisc.ac.uk/events/an-introduction-to-orcid-self-service-07-nov-2018
or go directly to register here:
https://www.eventsforce.net/jiscevents/407/home
There will be a short demonstration and we will address any questions. The UK ORCID support site will have updated material in the FAQ section as the switchover approaches.

When is the changeover happening?

An exact date hasn’t been finalised but it is most likely to be around the second or third week in November. An announcement will be made to main contacts and on the ORCID-UK mailing list in plenty of time.

What will I notice?

Once the switchover happens all the information currently held on our current consortium contacts system will be moved to the new system. After you log into your ORCID account, A new tab will appear on the ORCID site for those with administrative access (those currently recorded as main and technical contacts) called “Member Tools”. This tab will allow administrators to control contacts and information about their institution.

What should I do if I have any questions or issues?

In the first instance, as with all things ORCID with the Jisc UK Consortium, get in touch with the help desk: [email protected] The contacts FAQ https://ukorcidsupport.jisc.ac.uk/faq/faq-contacts/ gives an overview of the types of contacts needed for ORCID; please just ask us through the helpdesk if you need to check your current institutional contacts.
