Data Protection and ORCID: One year on
One year on from the publication of a blog post by supporter of ORCID, Andrew Cormack, we wanted to remind our community of his contribution to the UK ORCID Consortium and remember a cherished friend and colleague. His words then are as relevant as ever.
One year on from the publication of a blog post by supporter of ORCID, Andrew Cormack, we wanted to remind our community of his contribution to the UK ORCID Consortium and remember a cherished friend and colleague. His words then are as relevant as ever.
Almost exactly one year ago, Andrew Cormack published a blog post Data Protection Benefits with ORCID. This followed on from an event Andrew had helped to plan and facilitate for the UK ORCID Consortium community on the 8th of February 2023.
Sadly, Andrew who in his own words was “Chief Regulatory Advisor at Jisc, responsible for keeping an eye out for places where our ideas, services and products might raise regulatory issues. My aim is to fix either the product or service, or the regulation, before there’s a painful bump!” passed away shortly after, in April 2023.
Jisc described him as an expert with “security, data protection and legal knowledge, his acknowledged mastery of the interplay between legal and engineering concerns made him one of the most respected experts in the global cyber security and policy communities.” There were several other tributes such as those from GEANT The GÉANT community pays tribute to Andrew Cormack and Driven by a very simple but beautiful desire to help people, noting not only his expertise but also highlighting Andrew’s qualities when dealing with others. See also EUNIS, FIRST and CyberPolicy.
His ”kindness as a mentor and friend” were echoed in the message from Christopher Brown to our UK ORCID mailing list. “Andrew was a great supporter of ORCID and the UK ORCID Consortium. He served on the ORCID board from 2017 to 2019 and only recently stepped down from the Community Forum. … With his expertise and depth of knowledge, Andrew was admired and respected not just within Jisc but internationally. On a personal note, when I first joined Jisc 14 years ago, managing the access and identity management programme, he always found time to offer advice and support, and continued to do so until only a few weeks ago. He will be missed by us all.”
Thank you Andrew for your contributions to ORCID and the UK ORCID consortium, and rest in peace.
